The PSU Student Space Programs Lab Website
The Pennsylvania State University - Student Space Programs Laboratory
Remodeling and update of the SSPL website
Since January 2021
This project is a website remodeling, redesign, and update for the Penn State Student Space Programs Laboratory. The website stands as a portfolio of the lab and its students.
Background
According to the website:
“The Student Space Programs Laboratory (SSPL) at the Pennsylvania State University allows undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to design, fabricate, and integrate space systems. SSPL provides hands-on projects to apply classroom knowledge to real-world, interdisciplinary settings. SSPL students experience working through a complete design cycle and must develop a systems engineering mindset in addition to their component-level experience.
Founded in August 2006, SSPL united a long history of student space projects at Penn State. In the past, Penn State students have delivered payloads for multiple high-altitude balloons, microgravity experiments, sounding rockets, and the space shuttle “Get Away Specials.” Because of the synergies between projects’ development and because of the number and complexity of the projects, the need for a central management structure and systems engineering framework was evident.
SSPL exists to coordinate current Penn State student space projects and to expose students to the systems engineering process rarely seen in engineering classrooms. The organization facilitates the sharing of resources between projects, effective recruiting to engage students, and improved capabilities to attract future student opportunities. The lab also coordinates education and public outreach to inspire younger students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.”
I have been a member since Fall 2020. In January of 2021, the Lab Manager at the time reached out to me and asked if I could assist the team with an update of their website.
My Involvement
The website is hosted through Penn State’s WordPress accounts. For one reason or another, this is a more restrictive version of WordPress compared to regular WordPress. That said, when updating the website, a theme had to be followed closely.
The update team and I got together a few times to discuss themes, content, and organization.
Custom CSS was used quite a few times to fix details that the theme made difficult to change.
As of now, updates to the website have halted with the arrival of summer. However, this page will be updated when progress picks back up.
